When we travel back in time, does it change the future if you don’t touch anything but travel back?

We really don't know.

There are different theories.

Is there only one time line that is currently being changed by time-travelers?

Or do we create a brand new time-line in which we are a traveler but can effect events?

Or are there an infinite amount of time-lines in which every possibility exists and which we can travel to, thus effecting them?

@beckyromero Question: if there are multiple time-lines, either already in existence or created by time travel causing a sort of splintering etc......is travelling between those time-lines time travel or, is it travelling between multiple dimensions?

If we're moving to a different time (i.e. on the calendar), it would be time travel.

But that is sometimes described as being in another dimension or a parallel universe.

But of course we really don't know the answer. And if, say, we were to invent a time travel machine and we are observed to have disappeared, how will anyone know what theory is true unless we return? And if we don't, that doesn't proof anything either. We might have simply meant an unfortunate demise before getting the chance to return.

If a new time line is created by our time travel, it would appear to be just that: new branch on time time tree. But if we then leave that 2nd time line in an attempt to go back to the original, we will only create another new 3rd time line (and we're now mysteriously gone from the prior two).

That would be a disappointment to time travelers who might hope to use the technology to change history. Sure, we could go back in time and kill Hitler. But we've only done so in a newly created time line. He would have still existed in our original time line, which is left unchanged and suddenly has us mysteriously disappeared with everyone wondering what happened to us.

@beckyromero Obviously this all a bit of a brain teaser, right?

To me, it is more correct to call travel between time-lines (whether those time-lines are already existing or have been created by that self same travel), inter-dimensional travel.

But, if we are travelling along one time-line, on the calendar as you put it, then that is time travel.

The point is, I see a difference between the two.

Yes, that makes sense.

Continuum was good.

@beckyromero Continuum was excellent🙂

I also like the TV series of Twelve Monkeys and, on the multi-dimensional theme, I really enjoyed The Man in the High Castle and The OA.

If you like short stories, try:

And the World Turned Upside Down

HMS Eagle is somehow transported 25 years into the past... to the Andaman Sea on December 6, 1941.

Sorry, could only find the link to part 2, but follow it from there.

Not the best bulletin board format,
