What becomes popular is a reflection of the desires of the people. Obviously people are watching if they are still trending; and here you are talking about them giving them even more attention. (I know you havent mentioned names I'm just using this as an example. Not being specific)
If you are truly against something then the most powerful thing you can do as a consumer is not watch, not click, not search, and most importantly, not spend money on it.
Dont give them your money nor your attention. Pretend they dont exist.
