I don't know if there is a correct answer. In my case, my father was John Smith, I was John Smith Junior, and my son was John Smith III. After my father passed away, I just dropped the Junior in all except formal legal documents. When my father was still with us, everyone called him Johnny, they called me Smitty, and my son John.

Names have been changed to protect the guilty.

He becomes for example, Robert Hall, III

Robert Hall the THIRD
Not if the middle names are different.

He becomes one of those irritants.

John Smith III

If the first, middle, and last name are the same, then the eldest is "senior", the next is "junior" and the youngest is "the third". (I.e., Joseph Thomas Wentworth III)

But, if you look at George Herbert Walker Bush and George W Bush, for example, the younger Bush is NOT "George Bush Jr", because the middle names are not the same.

Clearly they lack imagination of any kind

They might use John Smith the first Smith the second John Smith 3rd

This second will not likely have a third. 😢
John Jr’s son becomes John Smith, III.
