You leave your purse or wallet in plain sight whilst attending to your affairs

It gets stolen. Is it your fault or the thief's fault ? who is to blame ?

Thieves fault.
I won't steal something just because I can.
Carelessness is not a crime and stealing is.
The responsable thing to do would be try to find owner or turn it in somewhere.
