When the average guy says he’s a “made man” what does that mean?

Like the first thing my mind jumps to is that he’s in the mafia. But I don’t want to go assuming every guy who says this is mobbed up and it actually means something else.

Usually it means you are a "made man" in the mafia and have committed a murder for the cause, those guys don't normally go around telling ordinary people that.
