When the average guy says he’s a “made man” what does that mean?

Like the first thing my mind jumps to is that he’s in the mafia. But I don’t want to go assuming every guy who says this is mobbed up and it actually means something else.

Generally means he has made his own way, was not born into a rich family or given a position in his family's business
