The saved lives/delayed death question is a good one. I think I look at it as more of a case of reducing anguish. The mate I stopped from walking onto a railway line - we were only 14 at the time. He had parents, a brother and sister and grandparents too. How devastated would they have been if I hadn't grabbed his t shirt? He's gone on to have a wife and 2 kids, so there's more happiness all round there.
Plus there are the circumstances of death. We all lose people and one day his family will have to lose him. But I think it would be easier for his wife and grown children to accept him passing from old age than his parents dealing with their 14 year old son being splattered across a railway line.
