The circumstances of the crime would dictate the severity of the punishment. Making the punishment fit the crime is cruel and unusual because it is such a subjective standard. The punishment for crime is time that must be served. Anything else will be unjust.

And in 10 years time when it was found they were actually innocent and the police just wanted a quick result so 'altered' some evidence... What then?

Basically all that says is that you’re as bloodthirsty as the murderer is. I’m not against capital punishment, as long as it’s fairly meted out and there’s no chance that the person might be innocent.
Then I’d see it as pest extermination, or the same as dealing with a rabid animal. No need to torture the person, simply put them down, end them. Gone, fini. No longer taking up space and oxygen a decent person could be using. 😳

Sit rapists on a stump and nail their bit to to the stump and let the victim push them backwards. 😬
