are young orphans told their parents are dead?

say, a 5-year-old child's parents die. the child is unaware of the turn of events. is the child informed of their parents' passing? or are they lied to?

It really depends on the child. My parents used to foster kids, and a lot were orphans. and they'd be told based on what they could handle. But we never lied. Just only told them bits of the truth

@AmmieBell ^this is true. When my mom died, my brothers and I all went to different foster homes and were told different things. We didn't realize we didn't all have the same information initially until a few years later, after we had all already learned that she had passed. None of it was really a lie, but more so "mama had to go be with God" or "Mama got very sick and so she asked us if we could take really good care of you and love you while she's away". Things like that. Only my oldest brother knew that she had died of cancer, and even he seemed to be in on not telling us the full story. He never directly said she died to any of us until years later

I would think they have to be told ever so gently

Only told what can handle.
Depends who’s involved what the child is told.
