Men are just copying women who complimenting each other on random stuff.
Like, oh I love that sweater! Pants, heels, etc.. even if the sweater, pants or whatever are ugly, they still use lines like that.
Men do the same thing, just if we talk about about liking your cloths or heels it's considered shallow unless the guy can pull it off well, so they go with something else.

@Viper If one can handle it well, it is the ultimate conversation starter. “Is that a new hair style? It is very becoming on you”, for an example. “You look so lovely in purple”. One has to believe the complement, to really be effective. Using eye contact, a smile and a little confidence, goes a long way. I work on this every day of my life. All day, no matter what environment, I’m in. I’ve had ladies swoon by telling them, how lovely, their hands were. To be charming, is becoming a lost art. One must practice, every day to be proficient and believable!😊
