I think there is no such thing as a best place, because the US is a beautiful and fantastic country.
Boulder, Co. might be quite nice, as a starting point.

Depends what you like. But I'd suggest Mystic CT for a short break. Great living museum at the sea port and there's a large aquarium and the downtown area is really nice including Mystic Pizza.
