Is sorrow a default state?

If we compare sorrow to darkness and joy to light.
Light needs to be present to overpower darkness, it has to have a source while for darkness, it’s just there.

sorrow might be a default state, maybe that's why Dryden and Purcell's collaborations are so beautiful
