The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year. Ancient civilizations used to celebrate it as it is believed to mark the end of the dark season and the begining of a new, bright one with the return of the light.
A solstice is an event occurring when the Sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere.
