I was a shoplifter for a long time and no longer.

It came from despair hopeless and unbearable loneliness.

I am still effed up but respect myself way more now. My conditions are slightly improved. I'm sure that helped.

@Stilltryinghard 🙁😢 Shame thats why its best not to judge people we never know what others go through! X

Yes. I stole some food from a supermarket in Seattle back when I was in my early 20s because I was broke and very hungry. I felt guilty about it for years. So...in my mid 30s I estimated what it had cost and adding more for inflation, I sent the money back to the supermarket along with a letter of explanation and an apology.

The supermarket manager wrote back saying he was really surprised; they'd had a lot stolen over the years but until my letter/repayment, they'd never had anyone give anything back.

I stole a piece of candy from a store when I was 6 years old. My father made me return it and confess to the store owner. I might have gotten a spanking, but all I remember is the confession. I have never stolen anything since then.

Gum when I was about 3 years old. My mom made me go back and tell the lady who owned the store and take her money from my piggy bank.

Yes but it was by accident. I had accidentally stolen a can of ginger ale. I paid for everything else I had purchased but forgot to take the ginger ale off my pocket as they didn't have a cart. I realized this when I left the store.

I did want to go and pay for it but I was scared they'd charge me for theft because of the color of my skin.

@SW-User Are you not telling? Lol
No, not even as a child. My father used to complain about people following us in stores, because he was scrupulously honest. One thing he always said was,

“there’s nothing a person can steal worth half as much as being trusted”.

I took it to heart.
