How to acquire experince as a web developer without office work??

I know this question is strange but i am asking about ways other than real work to gain experience as a web developer, i have all skills required and i have built many professional websites but when i see some of my friend web developers talking i feel that i lack the real work experience, is participating in open source projects enough to gain that experience??

Make some mockup sites, make sites for family and friends, you build up a portfolio that way, publish it in your own website and have social media presence. Then start looking for work online like on Twitter or sites like Upwork. Also ask local businesses if they need a website and show your portfolio.

The problem is that all chances is in the capital, a city that i can't stand live in for a second, this is a big problem for me, this is why i am searching for other ways to gain experience to find a remote job?
