I would say that children should be taught how to defend themselves, but not with a gun.

@SW-User So a 12 year old is home alone, 2 men break into her home and she is horrified. She saw they had knives . She called 911 and hid in her parents closet. Luckily she recovered her father's pistol which he had trained her to use. When they burst into the closet she fired killing one and wounding the other who was later caught. Had she not had the gun, she likely would have been raped , murdered, or both. Happen in Houston, TX. Teaching a child about guns and how to safely use one in the appropriate circumstance is invaluable training. In this case it saved her life. If more kids knew about guns, and understood them and how to safely handle them, accidental shootings would disappear to a great extent.
