If Americans write "meters" instead of "metres" (the street is 300 meters long), how do they write "meters" as in parking meters?

If they are both the same, how do they distinguish between the two?

the same way we don't need to use a y in tires to distinguish from round wheelie bits and getting fatigued.

@dirge Those aren't spelled the same way, though.

@Redstar They are in America. That's another example, like "meters".

@HeadGirl When is tired ever spelled with a "y"?
@Redstar tyres, in the uk is how you'd spell radials. tires in the US can mean either for a car or being tired.

@dirge But no one says "I'm feeling tires"
HeadGirl · 46-50, F
@Redstar No, it's "I'm feeling tired".

@HeadGirl Exactly.
