Dear British People,

enough is enough.
Really. Stop making an ass of yourselves. You are nice and kind and lovely people, do you really want to become the laughing stock of the civilized world?
"The people have spoken", haha. Just accept the fact that Brexit was/is/will always be a textbook example of a crackpot idea that leads nowhere but down.
Now get rid of the Demonic Possession and come back home please. We Europeans aren't perfect either, and we will happily accept your sincere apologies. Just send us a bottle of Isle of Skye whisky and an annual subscription to the Royal Shakespeare Company, and we will be fine. See you in Paris/Berlin/Rome next summer, let's get drunk [and I mean drunk!], and let's have a good laugh together, about this present madness. 🌷

Yours cordially,
helenS.

[Note added: this post is no longer relevant. The majority of British people have now decided, at their peril, to harm their own interests, and "get Brexit done". So be it. Go find more trustworthy friends. Mr. Trump is waiting for you. 😕]

I ask myself how many people in the UK have changed their mind, after the referendum. Or is everything set in stone, and all discussion is moot? 😐️

@helenS there will always be a swing group , whether it's about Brexit or a simple by-election.

My constituency is a swing area , Labour in 2010 , Tory in 2015 and back to Labour in 2017
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User I sure hope that the younger people - those who were too young to participate in the referendum, or too lazy, that these real victims of the Farages and Murdochs and millionaires and billionaires behind Brexit - those young people who will have to pay the bill, that these people will step out of this nationalist madness. We have already lost Poland and Hungary to nationalism and racism. We do not want to lose another country.

@helenS I was too young to vote in the referendum but democracy has to be honoured. If we don't leave this country will be divided for a generation
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User Democracy is not static. There is always hope. People can change their mind. A referendum does not display a static "general will of the people" that stays the same all the time.

@SW-User I have listened to labour and lib Dems and they honestly believe if they have another referendum and it is remain, they think that's it the country will all be back to normal and brexit the next day forgot and never mentioned and the country United again are they really that thick
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
@helenS so your saying then we can keep having a referendum every 2 years or before if people want to change there mind all the time
helenS · 36-40, F
@Nyloncapes What I think is that the idea of a referendum comes from an earlier, more archaic, more primitive concept of democracy. It is based on the idea that "the people" have a "common will" that is expressed in the referendum's result.

The modern democratic alternative is a parliament that representents the people, elected periodically. Every four years or so. The parliament represents all relevant opinions.

@helenS but reading the blogs and watching the news people are saying we had a referendum so why do we need another one? We made our decision in 2016

All the parties promised to uphold the result in their 2017 manifestos but the remoaners have done everything to thwart Brexit and ignore the result. That could bite Corbyn on the bum and his challenge is not to stop Boris but to stop Farage and the Brexit party breaking into the Labour heartlands that voted to leave. Corbyn is not as popular as he believes he is , many of his own party believe he's damaged goods. But that it also true of Boris and the Cinservatives. And Swindler is extremely unlikely to win a majority. Shes under the impression the South West will swing towards the LibUndems but she's not fully reading people's feelings
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User "We made our decision in 2016
— Only a parliament can make a decision, in a modern democracy. Or should. However, Brexit has poisoned the climate in the UK to such an extent that the parliament has become defunct. I have no good idea what could be done to help (apart from my love letter to the British people, which started this thread).
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
@helenS @helenS The parliament we have now is virtually strong remain and they have been biased
SW-User
@helenS the EU are facing a crisis too. Italy and the Netherlands have been weighing up a referendum for a while. And right wing feeling in France and Germany is on the rise.

The 2 flagship EU policies have failed. The Euro and immigration. How long before the EU 27 becomes 25 , 20 , 17?

The Union needs to reform if it is to survive
helenS · 36-40, F
@Nyloncapes Whatever the parliament decides is the will of the people because only the parliament represents the nation, in a modern democracy. Most members feel a strong responsibility for their country, although some have given up and will no longer candidate, because of all the hate they experience on the streets. Not only the general public, but also the parliament has been damaged by the referendum.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User "The Union needs to reform if it is to survive

— Fully agree with you on that. What we need is
(a) a one-man-one-vote principle (we don't have that!!)
(b) a true European parliament that can make proposals for legislation (they are not allowed to do that right now, because of nationalism in the member states).
Our main problem is nationalism in the member states.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
@helenS yes a lot of bad feeling on the streets, but they should not have lied about respecting the result they have resigned also because they can't face the people when campaigning they betrayed and lied to
helenS · 36-40, F
@Nyloncapes Oh yes they should not have lied. They should have published a statement saying that they take note of the referendum, and they will decide according to what they think is best for the country.
Nyloncapes · 61-69, M
@helenS parliament should have respected the result when article 50 was triggered it said after 2 years after negotiations we leave deal or no deal
