Dear British People,

enough is enough.
Really. Stop making an ass of yourselves. You are nice and kind and lovely people, do you really want to become the laughing stock of the civilized world?
"The people have spoken", haha. Just accept the fact that Brexit was/is/will always be a textbook example of a crackpot idea that leads nowhere but down.
Now get rid of the Demonic Possession and come back home please. We Europeans aren't perfect either, and we will happily accept your sincere apologies. Just send us a bottle of Isle of Skye whisky and an annual subscription to the Royal Shakespeare Company, and we will be fine. See you in Paris/Berlin/Rome next summer, let's get drunk [and I mean drunk!], and let's have a good laugh together, about this present madness. 🌷

Yours cordially,
helenS.

[Note added: this post is no longer relevant. The majority of British people have now decided, at their peril, to harm their own interests, and "get Brexit done". So be it. Go find more trustworthy friends. Mr. Trump is waiting for you. 😕]

No thanks . We have been propping up europe for far too long cant wait to leave .We should never have joined the EU in the first place we werent given the choice .
SW-User
@Rhodesianman there was a choice in 75 with the referendum.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@SW-User No, that was about our membership of the EEC and other existing economic communities. The EU only came into existence in 1992.
helenS · 36-40, F
@MartinII I am pleasantly surprised about the vivid discussions of my post.

Well all moot point as we'll be out.... Sometime in the next year or so. For one I don't see the EU letting us extend beyond 2021 and the new budget cycle without revoking article 50.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User I would rather assume that the EU authorities will let you guys extend in all eternity, until the Brexit movement will finally run out of steam. 😁
SW-User
@helenS but we'd lose the rebate. That is a huge blow to the remain camp. The cost of membership is continuing to be thrown about.... Of course ignoring the models that show a £70billion surplus to the economy through membership through cheap labour, free market access etc.
But everybody wants the £350million a week back. Ignoring again that figure is grossly incorrect not included the rebate and the direct subsidies back.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@helenS I think you are right - although whether the Brexit movement will ever run out of steam I rather doubt.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User People have no idea how beneficial EU membership really is. EU research funding, for example, generates more than 19,000 jobs across the UK, £1.86 billion for the UK economy and contributes more than £1 billion to GDP.

That's because reasearch in the UK is excellent.

@MartinII "although whether the Brexit movement will ever run out of steam I rather doubt.
— I'll remind you of that in 2027, when the "definitely last final extension" will be granted! 😁

@helenS don't I know about it. I was made redundant from a large research based university in London partly as they prepared to cut back on staff as Horizon 2020 funding dropped off. Since the referendum non UK universities are reluctant to partner with UK institutions on horizon 2020 grant applications.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SW-User Yes it's a desaster. It's becoming more and more difficult for Continental researchers to co-operate with colleagues from the UK.

@helenS 😞

@Rhodesianman We joined by referendum but perhaps you think we should ignore those.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@4185philip Not so, as I have already pointed out. We joined the EC in 1973. There was a referendum (to use today’s language, “confirmatory”) in 1975. The EU came into existence in 1992, and we joined by government-negotiated treaty. The electorate was not consulted until 2016.
helenS · 36-40, F
@MartinII
" The electorate was not consulted until 2016.

— No elections between 1975 and 2016?
MartinII · 70-79, M
@helenS On Europe, I meant. The only general election in which the Labour and Conservative parties took different positions on future membership of the EC/EU was 1983.
