Do you think the oil sands will ever be profitable?

Production costs too high, oil prices per barrel too low....
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
they are profitable now. The problem is the federal government won't allow the product to be shipped. new idea of shipping it in solid state by rail.

@hippyjoe1955 what do you mean by the dilutant must be returned?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@ShaythePanTransMan The oil makes up 70% of what is shipped down the pipe. When it gets to the refinery the oil is extracted leaving the dilutant. What do you do with it? The simplest thing is to recycle it by sending it back to be reused. It tend to be a bit expensive but it works.

@hippyjoe1955 Ah...do you still think the pipeline is better?
raysam363 · 31-35, F
It makes profit, just not as high as more traditional methods. All about that money in the end.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@raysam363 As is any enterprise. Nothing unique about oil in that regard. The big difference is the oil sands has a very high overhead covering reclamation of the land. It has to be the same condition as it started out. Hugely expensive. Worth every penny but.....

Ever is a long time.. When oil hits $500 a barrel (which it will at some point, but not soon) Then sure. But extracting it now would be shortsighted in the extreme.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@whowasthatmaskedman Well, if you know anything about Calculus, anything else about the oil sands especially relating to the environment, and anything about Derk Pereboom’s Professor Plum cases, you could probably help me a lot.

@EnchantedArtist2 yeah, and other emissions too

The Alberta oil sands? They are profitable.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@CountScrofula apparently some sources are just lying then so I need to erase and write this paragraph over again
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@ShaythePanTransMan I live in Alberta a few hours from the sands and our entire economy is tied to 'em. If they didn't make money we'd be fucked lol.

The profit margins are certainly lower than they are for other methods of oil extraction, but there's a LOT of money being made.
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
@CountScrofula That's cool; I didn't know that.
That's good.
