I'm going to ask a really stupid question:

Is it possible to knock down a load-bearing wall but keep the load bearing part?

Like, can we keep a column or something there and still open up the space?

Should be able to put in a column. Alternately you can install a load bearing beam in the ceiling to take the weight of the wall you want removed.
