I'm going to ask a really stupid question:

Is it possible to knock down a load-bearing wall but keep the load bearing part?

Like, can we keep a column or something there and still open up the space?

You can. I work in a building where this was done, while we still occupied the floor above. It was complicated, expensive, long-winded but is certainly possible.
