KINGSTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania school district is warning that children could end up in foster care if their parents do not pay overdue school lunch bills.

The letters sent recently to about 1,000 parents in Wyoming Valley West School District have led to complaints from parents and a stern rebuke from Luzerne County child welfare authorities.

The district says that it is trying to collect more than $20,000, and that other methods to get parents to pay have not been successful. Four parents owe at least $450 apiece.

@NativeOregonian No, it actually doesn’t. Tattoos and manicures, etc, are not necessities.

Food for your child’s lunch IS a necessity. My point was that if a parent is so occupied with their own wants that they ignore their child’s needs then maybe foster care should be considered.

However, if a parent can demonstrate that they are doing their part to provide for their children, then the taxpayers should step in to make sure that child is properly nourished and prepared to learn and thrive. And regardless of the reasons, our children should never be deprived of necessities. But the parents who can provide and don’t should be penalized.

@Mamapolo2016 It a parent cannot afford to pay for their child's school lunch, logic dictates they cannot afford that stuff either. School lunches should be provided free of charge, period.
@NativeOregonian Yes, logic does dictate that. But logic does not always drive the way people spend their money.

I assure you I am all about helping people - especially children - get a helping hand.

@Mamapolo2016 Then those parents do not deserve their children.
@NativeOregonian My point.
