why do we gravitate to people who are mean to us?

sometimes, people think that's only what they deserve

That you can learn to grow from and away. A lot of that will be about how you feel about yourself, how you accept in how they treat you, and this is the simplistic version they have something in themselves they don't like and you are someone if you let them take it out.
