Is it bad to be career-oriented? Like how much is too much?

Most of it is too much. Yet that's the agenda. I prefer a society that cares about one another versus getting ahead.

@Peaceful While I agree with what you say I do believe that you have to strive to be successful.

This is especially true if you have a family you want to provide a better life for.

You can care about people while trying to get ahead.

Because you getting ahead means those you love are getting ahead as well.

@Peaceful well what if what you're working for is not about you getting ahead but about something good for a lot of people, like something good for country...something that will give you satisfaction when you accomplish it. Not everyone is in it just for money and fame.

@TheunderdogofNY yes. But being self-sustained through hunting, fishing, and growing your own foods supercedes my initial comment and that's why I shared it.

Careers do not make a person. Honesty , integrity and skills do.

@TheIncredibleHulka then that wouldn't be career-minded. 🤔

@Peaceful True. But who am I or you to say what makes a person individually?

People define for themselves what their purpose is.

Personal accomplishments and satisfaction is important to the human experience.

Some people get that through their careers.

@TheIncredibleHulka careerist doesn't care about country but themselves only. And a careerist is strictly attached to money and fame. Unless we are talking about armies and folks who are associated with certain scientific fields or those certain government positions which require intelligent minds but has less pay.

@SW-User what if someone made a career out of doing things for people? People like them are there in many fields you didn't mention like teachers, doctors, engineers....doesn't have to be the army/ government officials always who contributes in nation-building.
I don't know why careerist is always used in a negative way.
