What does Intrusive thoughts mean?

I have read that term in regards to ptsd or childhood trauma but does anyone know what it means? I prob know but just wanna see others wording for it.

Kind of like a thought or idea that comes into your head without any warning that is really hard to get rid of. It usually is unpleasant and very distressing
