Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It was established to celebrate the end of World War I, and was commemorated on November 11. Eventually, the name changed, and it was used to celebrate all veterans. And now it is celebrated on a Monday all the time.

Memorial Day was originally to commemorate those who died in the Civil War but was eventually expanded to commemorate all Americans who have died in wars. It was originally set for May 31, but it too has been moved to Mondays.
