Did you know what career you wanted when you were in fifth-grade?

At last night’s 5th-grade graduation the teachers presented a slideshow of the 5th-graders holding signs with a chalkboard written with what career they wanted to have when they were grown. There were signs that said various types of engineers, doctors, scientists, architects, a couple of astronauts, some athletes, dental hygienists, Starbucks baristas, and funny that about 25% said You-Tubers. Not one person said lawyer, preacher, or teacher.

@Stereoguy I’m just thinking of what ways I can be useful that they need help with. They have built a new cafeteria/gym/auditorium and are going to have a buffet lunch line this coming year. Maybe they need some help there. Bringing a chef to cook the lunch but if it’s a buffet he’s probably going to need help. I have worked in a lunch place (Senior Citizens meals) a long time ago. I don’t know though what they need.

@Stereoguy I can go to the office and ask one morning and see what they come up with. Also sure they will have parent meetings and mention what they need. They have raised bed gardens, a greenhouse, chickens, goats, and no telling what else. They do a lot of their classes outdoors year round too (make them keep a pair of rain boots and a raincoat at school)...they showed a photo of the kids holding snowballs on their website. I can’t imagine how fun recess is there. I’ll be happy that they boy is spending a lot more time outdoors, have been giving him vitamins especially for the vitamin D so he wouldn’t be getting sick so much in the winter.

@Stereoguy I know, me neither. My eyes were always looking out a window when i was in 6th grade and the teacher would see it and call on me and I would always answer correctly. I just wanted to see something green outside. I felt confined being indoors all day. Even worse in junior high. They have picnic tables and benches and hold their classes out there every day they can, at least part of the day. They also let the classes use creativity in coming up with fund-raising ideas, if its’ something doable they’ll let them pursue it. So it’s kind of like they are teaching them the economics of running small businesses too.

@Stereoguy They do it on a much larger scale at the university for the business majors and have been for about 20 years. They come up with projects and see how much they can make from them and do a lot of sales.
