How much money do you usually bring on a road trip?

I have actually slept in a Walmart parking lot, while travelling. I was limiting my expenses and was too tired to push on to the next hotel anyway.

My road trips have been risky, because I had less than $1,000 in my account when I set off... Ideally I would have much more than that, because you never know if something can go wrong with the car. Even a new set of tires would be a major setback. Always bring an ice chest for food, that way money isn't wasted on fast food, and plenty of water in case you break down or have to cool fill the coolant supply tank.
