Can you work this riddle?

I didn't make it, extra points to any who know the reference ;)

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes out first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

@SW-User i see what you mean, i guess you could argue it both ways, one view being that Darkness is actually what you see, the other for darkness being immaterial and not a visible thing :)
