@Pianist1234 Carbon was the best candidate to become the basis of life.
Chemical stability, the capacity to form long chains (with other C atoms), while also having bonds with other elements.
And being relatively abundant.
That is, the best for the delicate balance between resisting Entropy and to "store" Negentropy (Complexity).

Another would have been Silicon. But even if stable and capable of long chains, it´s less "reactive", not enough.

@Pianist1234 It´s beyond my experience, so can´t.

0.1/0.2 candidates competing for one single position? Seems to be almost a randomness based bet, even for the .01 best of them.

If you still find it necessary / desirable, it may help to know what is it about. An undergraduated auxiliary position in a team for scientific research?

@Pianist1234 Be systematic, focusing more on understanding the core than in remembering trivia (yes, even science haves some of it).
Get in contact with the ones that have failed previously, and have a view on their errors by when they tried.
Be intensive practice skilled in the math asociated with the science problems.
Have a tutor, if possible.
Sleep and don´t get exhausted: tired people become stupid.

And good luck.🍀
