Do noise cancelling headphones work well?

Some people in my office use the bulky over the ear ones and say they are pretty effective. It depends on the type you get.

@TrunkZ I wonder if they would help me to block out noises around my house while I am sleeping.
@SW-User just use ear plugs. Headphones would be hard to sleep in and decent working ones like bose are rather pricey.
Or just scream out the window for people to stfu for free

@SW-User The over the ear ones are bulkier and would be uncomfortable to sleep with... especially if you toss and turn at all. Like @jetpack said ear plugs might be a better choice. If that is uncomfortable, there are devices and even apps that can generate white noise and other sounds that can mask outside noises a little.
