Why aren't America's downtowns as lively as they once were?

I know millennial think they're the new party crowd who lighten up the city, but really, most cities in America are not as lively as they once were. I can remember in my own city when everybody was out in the Malls and downtown on a Friday night or Saturday night. Millennials are homebodies compared to generation X and generation Y.
