Why are christians so desperate to deny those who became Atheists were ever christians? [Spirituality & Religion]

I used to be a devout christian but, after seriously studying the bible and examining my faith, determined it was all BS. I found the bible to be nothing more than a jumble of myths and superstitions taken from various older belief systems and frequently contradictory. As a result of my studies, I became an Atheist.

Now I find some christians are desperate to deny I was ever a christian. They just can't accept the fact that a christian could ever break away from "the truth" (as they like to call their beliefs) to become an Atheist. The idea is so alien to them they deny it's even possible. They even claim to know what the person experienced better than that person knows. Another claim is that I couldn't have studied the bible "properly" and that I should ask (their) "god" for help. What are they so scared of?

I agree with you for the most part and was raised catholic. However I do believe there is some sort of God but not the old gray beard type in the sky. I more that we all make up god as whole that is some sort of master entity that controls everything but we just messed ourselves up over time. I like the scientific approach, we have something in us (an energy) that is our basic what is referred to as a soul since it is energy as in physics, energy cannot be created nor destroyed it only can change.

I was raised Catholic also and was scared to death of God until I met Jesus Christ and asked Him into my heart and life. Before I became born again, I didn't know who God was or Jesus was for that matter. I knew about them but I didn't know them. Now I do know them.

@GodSpeed63 If you are a bible reader then you know that Jesus said "we are all sons of God". He is not the savior but a teacher. Organized religions of all manner and kinds were tools for the ruling classes to organize, control and exploit. The bible is nothing more than a guide to live by same as Hindu and other cultures came up with, these teachings vary by culture but just to aid people and keep them from doing unnecessary criminal acts.

So-called Christians and other religious people just need a crutch or have exchanged one addiction for another. They live in fear and really do not have any faith that there is something greater than us so they have to have an artificial faith. I really feel sorry for you and the others that cannot have true faith and belief without the props.

@GodSpeed63 In Psalms 82:6, from which Jesus quoted, God says to human beings: “I said, ‘You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High.’” The Hebrew word translated “gods” is elohim, which literally means “gods” or “mighty ones”—although it is often rendered as “God” (that is, the true God) in the Bible. That’s because, although plural in form, the word elohim is often singular in usage.

Galatians 4:1-7
“Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

@acpguy
In Psalms 82:6
You need to read the whole Psalm. Verse 7 says, "But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes". Verse 8 says, "Arise, O God, judge the earth; For you shall inherit the nations."

The Gospel of John 1:10 - 13 says, "He (Jesus) was in the world, and world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own (Israel), and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in Him name (Jesus); who were born, not of blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

Even though we were all created by God, we become His children by choice. We were called gods because we were made in the image and likeness of God, Himself. The only difference is, He is the Creator and we're the created.

@GodSpeed63 You are the typical so-called christian that reads what they want to in scripture but will take other passages as literal when it suits you to prove a different point.

There's where you're wrong. There is only one way to interpret God's Word accurately and that belongs to God alone. Without His Spirit dwelling in us, we can't interpret His Word the way it's meant to be interpreted.
