Why is Jack a nickname for John?

I get that Mitch is short for Mitchell or Bri is short for Bridget or Sabrina etc. But I just don't get why Jack is short for John.

I’ve never heard Jack used as being short for John. They’re both 4 letter 1 syllable words.

@Imsleepy Yep. Jack is definitely considered another word for John, as is; Ivan, Yannos, Johanne, Jean, Ian, Sean .... plus a few more that I can't think of...

@Imsleepy That's what I thought, but those names mean "John" in other languages. Russian, Greek, German, French, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic... respectively...
