Subjectivity, those aspects of reality that some philosophers (Thomas Nagel et al.) call qualia. The way it feels to experience the color "red".

@helenS Then I understand why I go into philosophy when science isn't enough.

@offingg You might be interested in Dr. Nagel's book "The View from Nowhere", Oxford University Press 1986. For a very brief introduction into qualia, you can find his famous paper "What is it like to be a bat?" on the internet. Also "What Mary didn't know", by Frank Jackson, also available on the internet.

@helenS Ahh! Thank you very much!!!!!!

@helenS Oh I've read that Nagel paper.
helenS · 36-40, F
@VSonMe The bat paper?? About what phenomenal consciousness is like?
VSonMe · 56-60, M
@helenS The very same!

@VSonMe Do you know L. Wittgenstein's "beetle in the box" argument? (PI 1.293)
It's about qualia being meaningless since they cannot be communicated.

@helenS I majored in philosophy. Nice to meet a fellow student 👋

@VSonMe Oh thank you for calling me a fellow student - though it's not true, I'm only a country girl with too much time on my hands. Anyway pleased to meet you. 🌷

@helenS I only read the bat paper this year. I was helping someone with a paper on the nature of consciousness - basically are we meat machines or is there some form of dualism. read some interesting papers - can machines have consciousness? That was connected with arguments for and against the Chinese Room as well as papers on non-human consciousness

@helenS Of course you're a student! You don't have to study philosophy at uni to qualify! You just have to have an interest

@VSonMe Maybe you've already visited this website: "http://www.consciousentities.com/"
If not I'd strongly recommend it.

@helenS I haven't. and thanks!

@helenS I don´t like Wittgenstein...
Too much "armchair" view.
