It is stressful. And debilitating. There comes a time in some relationships when the arguing habit is so solidified that normal methods don't work any more to defuse it.

Oh. Still, the dance steps need to change. Tell the friend when you feel they are unfairly blamibg you, you're not going to listen. When they start, leave the room, put on your headphones, turn up the TV volume. Don't listen.
If they're teachable it won't take many such incidents, possibly reinforcement a few times when they lapse.@Plumouter
