Why is the movie 50 shades of grey called that way? I understand that "Grey" refers to the co-protagonist's last name but why 50? And why shades?

What is that supposed to represent? Why specifically 50? What's with that number?

Life isn't all just black and white. There are Grey's and different shades of grey exist.
The film writer was counting the number of grey hairs on his head while thinking about erotica, probably.

The book was so poorly written that I really don't give a rat's arse.
