Parts of the deep South have that unfortunate reputation, as I’m certain you’re aware. My mother’s family hails from the Louisiana bayou, and when she attended Columbia U she actually took classes to get rid of her accent. “Employers would hear that and subtract IQ points,” she said. She’s 85 and you still can’t hear it—unless she’s annoyed. 😅
@bijouxbroussard accent is surely relative. when i am back home, people say that i have lost my accent. when i am in raleigh or cary, people automatically assume i just squeeked by the 7th grade and starred in deliverance due to my accent. LOL
@YourMomsSecretCrush My cousins used to tease me and my siblings because we have no “southern” accent at all. Mom can apparently still switch it on and off, when she’s among her family it isn’t as thick as theirs. Years ago I was trying to describe my uncles’ accents to a friend who had never left California. My brother, who was visiting, said, “Have you ever seen ‘King of The Hill ? Think Boomhauer + occasional French.” So that’s been my point of reference. Very entertaining, actually.
@bijouxbroussard gotta love the cajun accent. very unique.
