Take the good qualities you know about that person and what they've achieved and get them to talk about them.
Show interest and ask questions based on what they're telling you.
Let them tell you something and then ask how they went about it. Problems they must have faced. Then say how they must have had some character strength to have overcome them and moved on.
If that person comes to you with a problem,ask them what they perceive as the way forward and actively encourage them.
Show them support in terms of agreeing or helping to modify their idea into something more likely to be successful
Ask them what they think of those suggestions.
Try and be open and honest. Even if it means revealing bits of your own character that under normal circumstances you'd rather not.
