In my experience, asking unique questions might get a conversation going(like do you believe in free will(?), let's have a discussion based on that), having a good sense of humour can also facilitate some sort of bond, being genuine is also a large component of maintaining an initial connection. I've formed some pretty good friendships exclusively online.
Having said that, some people you start talking to aren't receptive, it's like talking to a wall, and then you also run the risk of encountering people who have issues that hurt the longevity of a connection, which you can do nothing about.

@deadgerbil Yeah. You kind of hit the nail on the head like that. But some conversations don't leave room for development either, or some other contributing factors. Being catchy and argumentative is certainly what sparks something in a conversation sometimes you got to be weary too, because not everyone's main area of interest is the same either.
