How necessary is compromise when dating?

Or are you not supposed to settle for anything less than your ideal person?

I cant decide.. I suppose in the early phases of dating, compromise is a good thing on both sides. However, if your entire relationship is compromising and possibly arguing / disagreeing, its time to move on. I guess thats a large part of the reason I dont date :\
