Why is it when lightning strikes a cornfield it isn't full of popcorn?

[quote]As it turns out, the corn that we typically eat is different than the kernels that become popcorn. There's only one variety of maize that will make it – Zea mays everta. Though it looks like a typical corn kernel, this particular variety is the only one that has the ability to pop and turn into a delicious snack.Apr 10, 2015

@Mamapolo2016 there has to be a way science can make other corns pop...we have come so far!
@Arorin Yes, they're in testing with nanobots injecting regular corn with explosive gases but so far all they've managed is the wrecking of a whole mess of Home Ec kitchens.
@Arorin There were also competitive scientific teams working on wiring all the scarecrows in a cornfield with loud noisemakers and then activating them simultaneously, but corn appears to have a high startle threshold.

@Mamapolo2016 well we are going to need to keep trying then because this just isnt acceptable.
@Arorin Before you take on this challenge, do what science rarely does...consider unintended consequences.

Ya got yer 1000 acre cornfield. Ya got yer hot August sun beating down, ya got yer
corn growing up and suddenly, the corn begins ter pop. Pop, pop, pop! Suddenly ya got yer big-rigger meat-haulers all slidin' around on four feet o' popcorn on the big road. Ya got little kids gettin' off the bus and disappearin' inta popcorn drifts. Whatcha got, son, is a guaran-damn-teed MESS!
