I was working maintenance then. Of the terminal itself.

That day I was checking the fire system. The individual smoke detection pucks on the ceiling.

I had a giant pipe. A cup at the end.

I’d cover the alarm with the cup. An spray fake smoke to it to make sure it responded.

Now each time I’d tell the central control to turn off that alarm. So that it wouldn’t cause a missive alarm to the terminal.

Except this one puck, in OUR terminal ACTUALLY didn’t belong to us but to the US Port Authority.

One min I’m doing my job. The next min deafening alarms are going of.

I remeber standing there watching giant doors roll down from the ceiling. Lights flashing. People panicking.

New Yorkers being New Yorkers... they’d just throw their language under the door then slide under following it. Like it was a space ship an they were trying to get to their escape pods.


I didn’t get fired till the following week. When I made every escalator go up.

Now I’m in the us Navy 😏
