If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest have to drown too?

No, they just move that swimmer to the center and fling them end over end into the air. The centrifugal force pulls the water out of their lungs and then they catch the swimmer and give them a good squeeze to get breathing restarted. Unless they catch them face down in the water, in which case they try again.
