@marcusaurelius People are overly sensitive and take such things seriously. I believe they ask this question to try and see how serious you are about what you said. I think they are looking for you to say something like, "Nah, nah just kidding you're great" because their self esteem is so battered and they are easily offended.

@offingg It gets a reaction. It lets the other person know you are serious and not afraid to challenge them, insult them, and respond to them. It shows you are not intimidated by the other person. It shows you are willing to follow through and take action against another person.
