If the professor on Giligan’s Island can make a radio out of coconut, why can’t he fix a hole in a boat?

He's can evil genius and a psychopath...he's lucked into a perfect society where he can rule as the alpha male and never be questioned.....so he purposefully sabotages his own attempts at escaping and tricks the others into being perpetually hopeless of rescue

I always thought it was because the professor never really wanted to leave the island. Why would he? He's the smartest there...and wasn't he always sweet on Ginger and Maryann?
