I don't think you can "overthink". I think there's bad thinking, circular reasoning. But thinking is a good thing, so long as you know when a line of thought is just overly negative or has no conclusion: like lack of evidence or isn't productive for whatever reason.

For that, in psychology, there are things called "schemas", which are kinda like relative lists. The way the brain organizes information. Say something comes up. "Blue." By association, your brain categorizes things relative to "blue". So, you think "sky, ocean, my favorite shirt." Et cetera.

So, you can sorta program your brain to creating another schema. "If I think negative thoughts or have a thought process which has no pragmatic end, cancel line of thought."

Basically, you just analyze whether your thought process is productive or aiding you; and, if it isn't, you just drop it or change your thoughts to a different topic. And try to find some way to trigger your brain into recognizing when your line of thought isn't productive.

Creating the schema "Not productive = drop or change thought process."
