why do people online assume things about other people?

Because we all have a lens that we look at the world through, that most of us aren't even aware of. I think most of us tend to assume that others think the way we do, because that's what makes sense to us. And I think some people tend to want to put others into a little box that makes sense to them, because to see some people for who/what they truly are would challenge their whole way of thinking.

Also, some people are very quiet, and very private. This causes others to wonder about them. And so, rather than suspend judgment, some people will fill in the blanks (what they don't actually know) about the person with whatever they think makes sense, or whatever they want to see.

And some people (myself included), tend to assume the best of others, and see what we want to see. I suspect that that's probably most people.

Notice, I say SOME people, because not everyone does this.
