Make sure it lights on the range. If it does not shut it off.

If you smell gas, run!
@JoyfulSilence lights on the range? What do you mean? I'm scared

@MushroomFaerie When you turn the knob on the range, it turns on the gas, which is piped in under pressure so will flow out under the range. Some ranges will have a pilot light inside, a small flame that is always on (fed by a little gas). When you turn the knob to release gas under the range, it will flow out and when it hits the pilot light, it will ignite in a mini (yet safe) explosion, and you are good to go. When you turn the knob back off, the gas is cut off and the flames sputter out. Some ranges do not have a pilot light, but rather have a "sparker" (I do not know the proper name of this). You will hear it clicking. When the spark hits the gas it ignites. Some really old ranges I think need to be lit with a match. I have only seen this on TV, though. It is all pretty tame, so do not worry. But if you turn on the gas and nothing happens, just turn it back off.

You will smell the gas if it ever were to leak or fill the room. Gas on its own is colorless and odorless, yet they put a chemical in it that you can smell.

If you have a pilot light and the range does not ignite, then the pilot light flame might be out. I think you can use a match to relight the pilot light or the regular range flame (which might also relight the pilot light).

If you are ever worried about any of this, call a pro. They should know what to do.

I wish I had a gas range. I just cannot seem to get things hot enough with my electric range. I have gas heat, at least.
@JoyfulSilence I actually don't understand any of this

@MushroomFaerie Search YouTube, there are videos. Go to a store that sells them and ask.
@JoyfulSilence Hippy Joe sorted me out. I don't have access to YouTube at the moment and I was trying to use the kitchen at that time so I came here... As you do

@MushroomFaerie I am glad you figured it out! Enjoy cooking! Make some hot tea and relax!
